I just saw this article in the Concord Monitor Check out this link: www.concordmonitor.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080917/FRONTPAGE/809170304It describes a plan to install 33 wind turbines along ridges in Coos County in Dixville and Millsfield. I don't know the details of this or what the current status is. I just read about this this morning (9-17-08). It would seem to me that if a 33 wind turbines are installed along the ridge lines in the county, that that would seriously detract from the vistas and remote nature of the area. Hiking the trail isn't going to be the same if one is looking much of the time at huge wind towers rather than the natural wind turbines. I so often hear about folks touting the benefits of windpower and calling oppents nimbys. But wind power isn't the panacea some may like to think it is and there are definite downsides. I remember a major wind project was going to go up on Mt Reddington in Maine and would have been visible for 50 miles from the Appalachian Trail. A major public outcry stopped it and a smaller more remote --from the AT-- wind project replaced it. I have been following this issue of wind power ever since. Do any of you have information about this project and how the CT may or may not get impacted? I still haven't made it up to the CT but hope to soon for a hike. It's a long way from here! DavidNH

Hi David!!
We are already aware of this and will be attending a meeting in Groveton on Oct 2 with Fish & Game. This is the public hearing meeting concerning these towers. It appears by the map, that it may affect the trail near Dixville Peak. Otherwise, it looks like it will be to the East of the trail. The bigger problem in my mind is the fact that the power generated is going to Connecticut! Not Coos County. Will try to let everyone know what comes out of the meeting.
