Some notes for those going out on the Cohos Trail this summer, 2008.
Work will soon be underway at the north end of the Col. Whipple Trail (former Cherry Pond Trail) in the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. A formal parking lot for several cars will be constructed and additional improvements on the trail will be carried out.
The Slide Brook Trail is still closed because of beaver flooding. See the website for ways to get around it.
The soils are extremely moist in the North Country. Finding water should not be a problem most of the summer.
The Lake Francis Trail has been fully marked and signed now, so there should be no problem locating it, particularly from Cedar Stream Road. The trail links with a River Road parallel trail that runs up to Young's Store. All that has been marked, too. So getting up to Young's is a simple matter and a better experience.
You can continue up the Danforth Road from Young's Store up to Bear Ledge Campground and Mountain Bungalow at the Prospect Mt. residence of Peter and Lainie Castine. They have trail to the summit of Mt. Prospect with its mind-bending views over First Connecticut Lake. Don't miss that when you are in Pittsburg.
Trail in the Coleman State Park-Sugar Hill-Nathan Pond region is very well blazed now. No trouble getting through there any longer.
At the height of land on the Three Brothers Trail (near Table Rock) there are a half dozen trees down over the trail. Use caution picking your way over them near the big cut in the ground, known as Ice Cave. By the way, Ice Cave is a deep wound in the earth created by the fact that Mt. Gloriette is slowly pulling apart in the vicinity of Dixville Notch. If you look carefully you will notice that the land to the north of the cut in the earth is three to four feet lower than the land to the south. The earth here has settled that much as the mountain slowly pulls away from the main terrain.
Bob Paradise has been through and done maintenance on the Old Summer Club Trail and the Kelsey Notch Trail up to the Baldhead lean-to. Those trails are well open and in good shape. He reports that he will get into the Kelsey Notch Trail again to touch up the blazing.
