There are some new things that you may expect on the trail this year. Here are some of them.
OLD HERMIT SHELTER
We will be holding a work weekend on June 16-17 to build the new Old Hermit Shelter on Sugarloaf Arm in the Nash Stream Forest. That shelter and its composting privy will be ready for occupancy for the hiking season.
TWO COMPOSTING PRIVIES
Aside from the new composting privy going into the Old Hermit Shelter site on Sugarloaf Arm, we will add a new composting latrine at Panorama lean-to, as well, sometime during the summer.
REBUILT ACCESS ROAD TO DIXVILLE PEAK
When reaching the junction in Kelsey Notch to Dixville Peak, you will find a very wide tote road now. It was built to permit huge windmill tower components to be ferried up the mountain. Northbounders must turn uphill (north) on this major access lane and reach a new bypass foot trail half way up the mountain (on the left). Southbounders will be coming out of the forest on our new bypass trail and will reach the big access road on the south flank of Dixville Peak. Drop downhill to the very wide junction at the bottom. Turn right (west) and follow the yellow blazing on old grassy tote way and good forest trail to Baldhead Lean-to 2.5 miles away.
DEER MOUNTAIN TRAIL
We will be building a new trail behind Deer Mountain Campground in northern Pittsburg. The long abandoned and obliterated Deer Mt. Trail will be restored over the course of the summer to the high elevation bog and to the remains of the old firetower on the north summit.
U.S. PORT OF ENTRY
The customs station at the border is a brand spanking new complex loaded with sophisticated equipment and staffed now 24 hours a day.
