We will be looking into the potential to develop a covered Nepalese bridge on the northern end of the East Side Trail in the Nash Stream Forest.
Near the very end of the East Side Trail, the path crosses Pike Brook, a big tributary of Nash Stream. Several years ago, the stream was bridged by a huge culvert. That culvert was removed and several large stepping stones were placed in the brook to faciilitate getting across the water.
But several of the large stones have since sank out of sight after being undermined by the stream. The crossing is sometimes difficult.
So we are going to propose building a simple open-air covered bridge based on the Nepalese bridge that spans Charleton Book at Mossy Glen in Randolph, NH. That bridge is, in turn, patterned after such bridges in the small Himalayan nation of Nepal.
The structures are elegantly simple but protect the bridge for the weather. They last three and four times longer than spans exposed directly to the weather.
