There have been quite a few improvements made to the Cohos Trail within recent weeks, and some are still on-going. Here are some of them, south to north:
1. The Col. Whipple Trail in Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge has been heavily weedwhacked and 500-feet of new puncheon planks are being installed at this hour. The trail is improving greatly.
2. Rowell's Link and a half mile south along the Bald Mt. Notch Trail has been cleaned out and, in some places, ditched to move water off the trail. The Rowelll's Brook bridge has been rebuilt, too.
3. The Old Summer Club Trail up the long flank of South Percy has been heavily clipped and the blowdowns cut out of the trail. A bit more clipping will be carried out by local volunteers, but the trail is in fine shape now.
4. The Percy Loop Trail has had a good deal of water diversion work along much of its length. The Percy Loop Camp has been cleaned and is in good shape.
5. The Sugarloaf Arm Trail has been blazed. The camp site has been marked for the first time. You can follow stakes in to the site. You may camp there.
6. The East Side Trail around Nash Bog has been thoroughly weedwhacked and cleaned. Six new puncheon planks have been installed and there are six more to go. The spur into the Devil's Jacuzzi even saw some work.
7. The approach to Gadwah Notch will get a good deal of rebuilding in a month or so. New puncheons will be installed, drainage improved, blowdowns removed, etc.
8. The five-mile string of trails around the high country of Dixville Notch has gotten a big rebuild, including a series of rock steps in the scree field on the Sanguinary Ridge Trail and erosion control in numerous places, particularly on the downslope to Table Rock from the Three Brothers Trail terminus.
9. The entire Covell Mountain Trail has been opened and has seen a good deal of improvements since it opened to the public, including more clipping, debris pulling, summit weedwhacking and view opening.
10. Blowdowns have been cut out of the Round Pond Brook Trail.
11. The Big Brook bridge on the Falls in the River Trail has been raised one foot higher over the stream to increase the likelihood that it will not wash out during floods.
12. The Black Cat Trail, the last path to be built in the Cohos Trail system, has been flagged and GPSed. We should know this week if we can begin cutting the trail.
