Here are some new things to put in the back pocket for the new year.
Pete Castine reports that the new Falls in the River Trail, the Moose Alley Trail, and the Idlewilde Spur are all getting a lot of xc-ski and snowshoe use this winter. That's a great sign.
The Owls Head Trail bypass has been open for a few months now so that great trail is back on line in Jefferson.
We will do our best to reopen after five years a newly rerouted Slide Brook Trail (formerly Cherry Pond Link) between Owls Head Trail trailhead and the old B&M raill line railbed. That will eliminate lots of road walking. Bob Paradise of Stark has agreed to saw out 700 or more linear feet of planking so a YCC trail crew can build a long bog bridge in there.
The Covell Mt. Trail is just a spring week away from being completed end to end. That's well over four miles of trail over a fine low summit with views.
The new Black Cat Trail will be cut before hiking season begins, as well, completing the entire Cohos Trail end to end.
We may be able to build a new lean-to on the Cohos Trail, hopefully in Dixville Notch, perhaps high above the falls where the branch of Clear Stream would provide good water. There is some flat ground in there, too. And the hauling of material would not be too terribly far in distance.
We are close to getting confirmation on having materials and fabrication labor donated so that we could construct a new pedestrian covered bridge at some site along the trail, hopefully on the new Black Cat Trail.
We are at work on updating the Cohos Trail maps. Maps 1, 2, and 3 have already been updated. More to go, with major changes coming in the latter pages to reflect really substantial changes in the trail.
We are after some five separate grants and hope to obtain the majority of them so we have some serious funds to finish the trail and put the new structures in place.
Construction work will start on a new US border station, so that might have an impact on the northernmost mile or so of trail.
Seeking nominations for TCTA treasurer and TCTA secretary. Join the officers, if you have a mind to.
We will soon commense a fund drive to help raise money for metal roofing for the new lean-to and covered bridge, and some dollars to defray hauling costs to get the pre-fab structures to the vicinity of their final sites. You can buy a metal panel for a $25 donation.
Why not join the new Friends of the Cohos Trail page on Facebook.
And why not get out on the trail with snowshoes or skis this winter yourself.
