The new Black Cat Trail in northernmost Pittsburg has been laid out and flagged. In fact, a good deal of downed debris has been removed from the treadway.
Next spring, work will begin in earnest to formally open this new trail from the Second Connecticut Lake boat access lane to the vicinity of the East Inlet Road.
Once the Black Cat Trail is opened, all the original proposed thru-trail development on the Cohos Trail will be complete. The trail will have been cut from end to end.
Next year we will do some tweaking to make the trail better. We need to reroute the old Slide Brook Trail in Jefferson to eliminate the road walk there. And in 2012 we hope to be able to cut a three mile bypass in the Nash Stream Forest -- the Trio Trail -- to get people off two miles of the Nash Stream Road. We also are looking into creating a new trail out of Coleman State Park up and over Holden Hill.
There is one spur trail too, in the very original plans, that may get attention in the future, and that is the restoration of the Deer Mountain Trail not far from Deer Mountain Campground not far from the Canadian border.
But by the time the summer hiking season begins in earnest, hikers will be able to move on a finished system for more than 160 miles. And once we get that done, we'll plan a big party, hopefully for sometime in August, and have a real celebration.
