Those looking for new terrain to explore might motor up to the top of the state and get out on the miles of new trails that have been completed from Young's Store at Happy Corner five miles north of Pittsburg village, all the way to Second Connecticut Lake boat launch access lane.
Nearly ten miles of road walking along Route 3 has been eliminated, with more to come early next year. The only gap remaining between Youngs and Second Lake dam area is a less-than-two-mile gap from the summit of Mt. Covell down to Round Pond. All other sections are now in place. All have been cut and most of the terrain has been signed and blazed. So the routes are easy to follow.
So you can hike uphill from Youngs to Mountain Bungalow and on to the summit of Mt. Prospect, then down and over to Ramblewood Cabins and Campground. From there you can hike three miles to the summit of Mt. Covell (a day trip now, not a thru-hike yet). At Round Pond, pick up the Round Pond Brook Trail south to Route 3, then drop down the Camp Otter Road to the Camp Otter Trail. Follow that more than three miles to the Magalloway Road. Cross that road and pick up the Moose Alley Trail two miles to the trail junction with the very popular Falls in the River Trail. Run that more than two miles to Second Lake dam and pick up the short spur out to the access road. And there you have it.
Lots of hiking. Lots of terrain. Several summits, a big falls and flume, moose and bear habitat aplenty, the wild Connecticut River nearby, and the big Connecticut Lakes, too.
Get you fanny out there.
