Just got word that an agreement has been reached between the Randolph Mt. Club and a landowner in Jefferson to permit a new trail reroute/bypass from Route 115 to the Owls Head Trail 900 up the mountain to where the trail resides on White Mountain National Forest lands.
This would allow a new link to be brushed out in a day or two and the trail formally reopened, perhaps within the next 30 days. For those who hike the Cohos Trail and love the great ledges on Owls Head (with the stunning views) will like this development.
It will allow us at the Cohso Trail Association to consider creating a new Slide Brook Trail bypass to get around the long closed section of the trail between Route 115 and the old B&M Railroad right of way through the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. We'd have to build a long puncheon span in there to cross the remains of an old beaver dam, but it could be done, perhaps by hiking season next year.
