After yeoman work on this new 3.4 mile pathway, the Camp Otter Trail in Pittsburg is now open.
This trail, now linked to others to the north allows hikers to get off Route 3 for eight miles. It also links to the Round Pond Brook Trail to the north, so one can actually hike over 10 miles from Round Pond to Second Connecticut Lake boat launch access road with spending more than one minute or road walk on Route 3.
Now the last major piece of the puzzle to get hikers off the highway is being built, the Mt. Covell Trail. That's the longest link at 4.7 miles, and it is now about half cut. Once that is in place, one could walk from Young's Store at Happy Corner to Second Connecticut Lake boat launch access road virtually without stepping foot on Route 3.
Late this year or next spring, we will put in place the last two miles of trail, the Idlewilde Camp Trail, to take trampers off Route 3 from Second Lake to the trail across the highway from East Inlet Road. Once that's done, walking on Route 3 will be a thing of the past.
