There still seems to be a bit of confusion in the area between the Nash Stream Road just a few feet north of the trailhead to Pond Brook Falls and the way up to Sugarloaf Arm.
We will get in there next year and greatly improve the signage and blazing so people can't miss the turns.
Northbounders. Once trekkers make the left turn off Nash Stream Road (just beyond the Pond Brook Falls trailehead) and on the two-tire path to Trailblazer bridge over Nash Stream, look for a gate in 500 feet. Pass around the gate to the left and continue on a short distance to and over the bridge and climb the easy hill on the west side of the stream. Reach the old West Side Road (an ATV trail). Turn right, north, and follow this old gravel way for a little less than half a mile, undulating up and down and then eventually reaching a small meadow and bending to the left and rising ever so gradually into tighter woods. Once in the thick of the trees, watch on your right for a fairly new metal gate, a sign and yellow blazing up the trail. Turn hard right uphill, pass the gate and climb out of the valley quickly. You are on the route up Sugarloaf Arm that will take you farther north to the Sugarloaf Mt. Trail low on that mountain.
Southbounders. Climb over Sugarloaf Arm and descend down to the gate just off the West Side Road. Pass around the gate and turn left, east, and soon walk out of a tight wooded area and reach a small meadow. The trail turns downhill and south here and runs for half a mile or less, undulating up and down. Once out of one of the troughs, watch on the left for a snowmobile trail entrance headed downhill and eastbound. Take that left and walk downhill straight away to Trailblazers bridge. Cross the bridge and stay right at another gate and walk out on a two-tire grassy lane to Nash Stream Road. Turn right, south. The trailhead to Pond Brook Falls is just a few feet away on the far side of the road.
As I mentioned above, we will get in there this spring and do a heck of a job improving the signage and blazing. If you miss the turns after we're done, we'll go out and find your bones and give you a proper burial among the spruce and fir. Fair enough?
