The Castines report that the Mt. Prospect Trail has been completely cut and cleared now from Mt. Bungalow just above Danforth Road on the south side of the peak over the summit and down the northeast flank and into the property of Ramblewood Cabins and Campground. Blazing and signage is fairly well complete now and a few bog bridge spans will go in shortly.
So the trail over the fine summit will open formally in a matter of days. A number of hikers have already been over it, with a stop on the broad open summit with the grand view to the north, east and south.
To day-hike the trail, travel Route 3 north in Northern NH all the way to the top of the state and travel through the village of Pittsburg and in five miles approach the little hamlet of Happy Corner. Just before Young's Store, Danforth Road appears on the left. Travel uphill on Danforth Road and motor a long mile, disregarding other lanes on the left. Stay straight on Danforth until the road appears that it will end at a home ahead. Look for a steep drive on the left. Take that drive uphill a quarter mile staying right an one intersection and watch for the sign that states Northern Headquarters of the Cohos Trail Association. Park just beyond the sign. The access to the trail is at the head of the parking lot.
To reach the other end of the trail by car, travel another long mile beyond Young's Store, pass First Connecticut Lake Dam, and West Bay in the lake. Look for Ramblewood Road on the left as you round West Bay on Route 3. Travel a mile uphill on the lane until the road ends at a parking lot at the Ramblewood Cabins and Campground office.
