We never claimed to be up-to-date on news happenings but some stories are better late than never! Bob and Carolyn Eidell are long time wildlife photographers from Clarksville and they told me a story of a once-in-a-lifetime rescue: As their custom is, they left early in the morning to scout out the back roads of Pittsburg looking for interesting photos for the Colebrook Chronicle in which Carolyn worked. They ended up at Big Brook Bog and saw a Bull Moose near the edge of the bog... They snapped a few shots then went off to explore more tote roads and ponds... The next day, for some unknown reason, they went back to Big Brook Bog and noticed that the bull they had photographed the day before was still in the same place. They got out to investigate and found that the moose was stuck in the mud. They contacted Charlie Colcord from Pittsburg who in turn contacted Fish and Game. Chris Egan and Adam Cheney were off for the day but volunteered their time to come up and take a look at the situation. They came prepared with a boat and come-along... The moose was obviously stuck in the mud so they hooked up straps and the winch... After a couple hours of tugging and pulling, they managed to drag the moose up onto solid ground but the moose appeared to be dying... Chris and Adam suctioned the mud out of the moose's nostrils and the moose revived and stood up... After standing up, the moose stood there and watched them, showing no signs of aggression so Chris, Bob and Adam headed him off into the woods, never to be seen again! (Total time: 4-1/2 hours later) ***Thanks Bob and Carolyn for the great story and photos!

There you have it. That's the reason why the Cohos Trail is rather different than your average hiking experience.
I've had two dozen encounters with moose in the forests in northern Coos over the years, and it never less than exciting.
Hike with moose. Don't fail to do it!

you guys are the greatest for taking the time and making the effort to do that for a wild animal - most human beings would not have bothered - just rationalized that it is best to let nature take its course!

Great story and pictures. And thanks to those that helped Mr. Moose. I was on a pond off route 16 in Errol a few years ago. A moose was swimming across and did not see us in a canoe until we yelled and he then turned and missed running into the canoe by a few yards. He just wanted to get to the other side of the pond in a short straight line. RRC
