We just got word from the NH Division of Forests & Lands that we have been given permission to carry out plans in the future to restore Kamp Kirk in the Nash Stream Forest and turn it into a hiker hut that could house 14 overnight guests.
This is welcome news for our little association. It means that, if we can obtain $10,000 to $20,000 in funds over the next year, we will be able to refurbish this rundown but historic labor camp and create a fine overnight hut for hikers and other outdoor recreation enthusiasts.
This summer we hope to be able to install a large lean-to on the west wall of the building in the place of the old kitchen, which we will tear down. The lean-to will stretch the whole length of the building, and in the future it will become the new kitchen for the hut.
We will put a new roof on the shed, install a composting cage in the compost latrine, add some more fill in the parking area, and clean up the site a bit more.
We received donations of numerous new windows and a new door last year. Some of these could be installed in the lean-to and the studs covered temporarily with tarpaulin material so that the structure will shed any and all rain. That would keep any camper dry. We could move some bunks down from the upstairs interior to the lean-to so that at least a few could really sleep in comfort.
The interior of the camp will be off limits because it is not entirely safe to occupy. In 2011 or 2012 we hope to have the while camp refurbished so that it can be formally opened and operated as a hiker hut.
We have been told that we may able to charge a modest fee for staying at the camp once the building is complete, provided that all the funds go to maintain and improve the structure and the grounds, and the trails in the Nash Stream Forest.
We envision overnight stays in the $20 to $25 range, with lesser rates for groups. We will probably eventually put in a couple of tent platforms, too, that will likely be free to use.
In a few days, go to the home page and click on 'Kamp Kirk' on the left hand margin. Near the bottom of the copy that will be posted there are directions to Kamp Kirk via foot and by car.
Kamp Kirk is a little less than half a mile easy walk north of the Cohos Trail along the old Nash Stream Road. It is set on a small knoll in the woods next to chattering Silver Brook.
If all goes well in the future, Kamp Kirk will get a deck facing east, big south-facing windows, 12 upstairs and two downstairs bunks, a kitchen with countertop cast iron burners and an industrial sink (hand-carried water), a rebuilt porch, simple solar lighting, new metalbestos chimney, and a few new donated furnishing and decorations befitting the Great North Woods. The hut will also boast a store (in a cabinet) where guests may buy a few supplies for their trek.
Once finished, Kamp Kirk will become the southern headquarters for the Cohos Trail Association for the summer and fall. We hope to be able to have a caretaker at the site at all times. It will be closed during the winter and spring.
