Timberland owners in Pittsburg have given the green light to two of our new planned trails in the area, according to Pete and Lainie Castine.
Covell Mountain Trail
This path will be a major trail in the patheon of trails in the North Country. On its southwestern end, it will begin at Ramblewood Cabins and Campground, with its view over First Connecticut Lake, and wind through mixed hardwoods and softwoods in easy terrain for about a mile until it runs up against the small but fine peak known as Covell Mountain. The trail will climb the entire upland to its broad summit. There we will be able to open a terrific view east far into Main and north into Canada. Below will stretch the 3,000 acre expanse of First Connecticut Lake.
From the summit, the path will head north and slowly arch and slab a flank of a northern spur peak of the main one before descending in moderate terrain down to an old grassy lane on the west edge of Round Pond. A sign kiosk will go in there so that it becomes a formal trailhead.
This route will be more than three miles in fine terrain. The view will be a show stopper.
Round Pond Brook Trail
The Covell Mountain Trail will connect to this new route via a lazy walk alongside camps that front Round Pond. Pick up this new trail just below the boat launch parking lot and on the east side of the brook that flows out of the pond.
This new route will descend very gradually in very pleasant open woods all the way down to Route 3, a little less than two miles away. It will follow the brook a ways, cross several rivulets, pass through an open area with limited views and eventually reach a clearing. The lane into the clearing runs down to Route 3. This will bring trekkers close to Camp Otter Road and, within about half a mile of the new Camp Otter Trail.
This is great news for all. Thanks to Pete and Lainie for seeing this through for us. These two trails are huge factors in the future of the Cohos Trail, and will make it possible to complete the system sooner than later.
