Try as I may, I can't locate Mountain Recreation's website that use to offer overnights at heated yurts in the North Country towns of Millsfield and Dummer.
Bill Altenburg once ran nine yurts in the Phillips Brook area until the timber owners terminated the lease. He moved four of the nine yurts to Millsfield and Dummer and set up operations again and posted a fairly nice website. But the site is down and there is no mention anywhere about the overnight system, once popular with dogsledders, being up an running.
I did find a post indicating he had four yurts for sale a year ago, but that's the extent of what has come up on the web.
I went in to Phillips Brook to take a look at the system five years ago and had a talk with a caretaker in there. I was very much impressed with how quickly such a simple system of huts could be erected. But, apparently, the last iteration is no more. The yurts are gone, and perhaps all sold off.
Anyone know anything about that? The only thing resembling it is the small Gunflint yurt system in the U.P. of Michigan, as I understand it.
