There is a possibility the association will receive a small amount of money to help rebuild the storage shed at Kamp Kirk in the spring/summer.
The existing shed must be torn down and a new one put in its place. But the new one would could and should serve two purposes that will make the site usable for overnite hikers this coming summer.
Some two-fifths of the shed space would be used to store firewood, equipment and tools. The remaining space would get a plank floor so that it could be used as a lean-to, so folks could camp there in the evening.
Kamp Kirk itself is not safe for the general public to occupy, but the site can be used. Therefore a lean-to would solve a big problem we have with people camping illegally in the Nash Stream Forest.
The site of the camp boasts excellent water (Silver Brook), a patch of grassy lawn, a small amount of parking, and a composting laterine (once we place the composting cage under it). With a lean-to to sleep in, the site would be pleasant enough.
It would offer trekkers a look at the existing but closed Kamp Kirk, a two story building that was once a work camp for a construction crew that built the Nash Bog Dam (breached in 1969). The structure has some history to it, and the association would like to salvage it and turn it into a hiker hut sometime in the future.
The association can always use materials for projects like this or a few dollars here or there to purchase materials.
There are telephone poles on hand for uprights for the shed. There are five or six metal roof panels (new) on hand too. The most pressing need would be dimension lumber (2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x8s, plus sheathing material, either boards (we have some) or T-111 panels (5/8"). The shed could be outfitted with a number of windows (to reduce siding costs), as we have access to dozens of old fixed windows that are in very good condition.
If you would like to donate materials or a small stipend or would like to work on the project, please let us know by emailing cohos@cohostrail.org
