It's a little early to focus on 2010 work right now, but here are a few thoughts regarding what we might be able to accomplish in 2010. (Wishful thinking, eh!)
MAY
Finish flagging the proposed Three Brooks Trail in the Nash Stream Forest from Percy Loop Camp to Pond Brook Falls. This trail, if permitted, would eliminate two miles of road walking in the Nash Stream region.
Install some 2x4s and 2x6s in the walls of Kamp Kirk and add several windows. Start the rebuild of the shed with space for lean-to sleeping quarters. Put the compost cage in place in the new composting latrine so that the building can be used.
Clean out the entire Gadwah Notch Trail from the Headwaters Gate to Baldhead Lean-to.
Flag a new route on North Sanguinary Ridge for completion in 2011.
Finish flagging the proposed Logging Camp Trail (?) from Second Lake to East Inlet Road junction with Route 3.
JUNE
Cut the Falls in the River Trail and install the bridge over Big Brook. Open the trail by July 1.
Install the puncheon span in the Camp Otter Trail and open that trail by July 1.
Obtain permission to put in the Logging Camp Trail.
JULY
Cut the Logging Camp Trail and open it by August 1.
Finish the shed/lean-to at Kamp Kirk and open it for hikers. Rebuild the porch on Kamp Kirk and put a permanent sill and foundation posts under the north wall. Shore up the west wall temporarily.
Obtain permission to cut the Three Brooks Trail in Nash Stream
AUGUST
Cut the Three Brooks Trail in Nash Stream and open it as soon as possible.
Reblaze miles of trail from Nash Stream to Dixville.
SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER
Cut the proposed Round Pond Brook Trail and open it.
Cut the proposed Mt. Covell Trail and open it.
Finish the last few feet of the Mt. Prospect Trail and open it.
Install permanent footings and sill under south wall of Kamp Kirk.
END OF OCTOBER
The Cohos Trail is complete from end to end, with the exception of the proposed restoration of the spur Deer Mt. Trail up that mountain, scheduled for work in 2011.
I hope to be able to spend two complete weeks on the trail this coming spring and summer developing the trails, cleaning them up, and working on Kamp Kirk. Volunteer help is always welcome, of course.
Perhaps we can hold some sort of shindig at Kamp Kirk this summer and bring in a few dozen folks to have fun and do a day's worth of work on the trail. Then have another hoedown up in Pittsburg for trail work there. We'll bring the beer and iced tea and some locally-grown beef for burgers. We'll bring guitars and other instruments, too.
What do you say? Drop us a note if you would like to have a party and lend a hand.
