One big piece in the final puzzle of the Cohos Trail has been completed. Lainie and Pete Castine just reported that work has been finished on the two-mile Moose Alley Trail from the Magalloway Road, near the bridge over the Connecticut River northeastward to Route 3 just south of Big Brook bridge.
That is a major link in the final development of five new trails that will make up the last miles of the Cohos Trail.
At the last minute, the route was adjusted a bit to get around a small bog area, so there is no need for a puncheon bridge string.
The trail is now blazed and small CT signs are going up. We will post the trail name signs shortly.
If you wish to try out the new route, here's now to find it. Travel north on Route 3 from Pittsburg village some five miles. Pass through Happy Corner where Young's Store is located, and keep rolling north. About four miles farther on, a wide dirt road will appear on the right. There is a sign indicating the Magalloway Road. Turn right and follow that road a long mile. The lane will eventually dip downward toward the river. The bridge over the Connecticut River will come into view. When it does, look on your left. There is a pullout by the road fronting a flat grassy old log landing. Park there.
Follow the weedwhacked path half way across the landing and then rise easily to the left and pick up the trail as it enters the woods. You're all set.
On the north end, reach the bridge on Route 3 over Big Brook. There is a pullout on the right. Park there. Now walk back across the bridge and uphill about 600 feet or so. The trail will be on your left (running from the northbound lane of traffic) and will punch into the woods immediately.
This new trail is in one of the most heavily trafficked moose habitats in New England. If you are quiet, there is a fair chance you may see a moose in this area. Moose like to walk newly cleared trails as much has humans. If you meet a moose, keep your distance, then skirt around the creature in a wide arch. Pick up the trail again and proceed.
Coming very soon: the Camp Otter Trail. Watch for a new posting on that.
