Although it is late in the season, it appears we will be able to open the long-awaited Moose Alley Trail in Pittsburg township within the week.
According to CT treasurer/secretary Lainie Castine, she and president Pete Castine completed brushing out the entire two mile trail from within 300 feet of the Magalloway Road bridge all the way to Route 3 just south of the Big Brook bridge.
The route has been throughly blazed and small CT signs are about to go up. The trail name signs are complete and all we need is the okay to place them on posts and install the posts at the trailheads.
The Moose Alley Trail is a very pleasant walk in largely flat and gently rolling terrain through some of the best moose habitat on the planet. Moose are very common here, to say the least.
There are a few notable features along the pathway. For quite a while it skirts a recent logging cut that is growing in fast, so hikers can witness just how fast logged areas rebound in Coos County.
About half way along the route from either end the trail crosses a grassy bog-like area with a narrow meandering stream at its middle. That will get a double-log bridge in the future. But it can be easily crossed without a span.
To the southwest of the grassy opening, the trail crosses a low ridge and skirts an old log clearing filled with raspberries. In the distance there is a fine view of Pittsburg's 3,000-foot ridgelines.
At the western end, it's just a few feet to the Connecticut River and the Magalloway bridge. The Camp Otter Trail, soon to open as well, runs west off the Magallloway Road near the bridge.
