Those who like to go in style might want to come up to Nash Stream Forest next weekend to try out the new composting latrine that the association will be building at Kamp Kirk.
A group of do-gooders will be assembling a fine new relief station, the parts of which were cut and prepared by Chad Pepau of Stark more than half a decade ago. We've finally got a place to put the creation and now we're going to hammer it together for all creation.
The new building is a duplicate of the composting toilet at TCTA's Percy Loop Camp on the north flank of North Percy Peak. It's a sister privy, so to speak. It will need the composting cage built over the winter, but we'll finagle something to make it usable for the time being without impacting the environment or driving people away.
Nothing could be easier to use. Do your business but before you leave, grab a handful of peat moss in a container on the seat. Drop the peat moss down the hole and, behold, you have mastered the equivalent of flushing a toilet at home. Peat moss adds carbon to the waste mix and keeps it drier. The material soon heats up as bacteria begins its work. The composting sequence is underway, all for free.
And who thought you could go green just by sitting on your rear end, eh?
