just called the applebrook to make our reservation. on the phone, the woman i spoke to pronounced the trail co-haas. i've been saying co-hoes this whole time. i'm assuming she's right and i'm wrong. doh! i should at least know how to pronounce it before i'm hiking it.
king of reminds me of Buena Vista, Virginia (on the appalachian trail) -- which the local's pronounced as beeyoona vista.

The locals usually pronounce the county of Coos this way:
Co-ahss.
The original journal entries of explores and early surveyors spell the county as Cohos or Cohoss.
The Cohos Trail pays tribute to those early journal entries by using the original spelling.

Just living here in Coos Paradise all these 38 years brings up that interesting question with some interesting answers. There is an umlaut over the 2nd "o." This is most important, and the correct way natives pronounce the word, in this county, the finest and most remote in all of NH.
Several of the original spellings were Cohos, and Cohoss. Then was then, now is now. The largest and most northernmost county takes its name from the Abenaki natives whose translation is "white pine."
The Western Abenaki tribe called our area "Coo-ash-aukes," which means "dwellers in the place of the white pine." Before the British arrived the big white pine here was 8" in diameter and 200+' tall. That is another story!
The majority of the general public/residents here, in this county,, including me who wishes to get every thing accurate, pronounce the county "Co-hoss" without the "h "sound. Adding the "h" will get you here to there for free!
disclaimer: "void where prohibited." So there you have it!

And to complete the pronunciation of the trail, we prefer to say the Cohoss Trail, as percy peaks states above.
disclaimer: YMMV~! your mileage may vary
