A fellow soon to be Cohos hiker asked me about State Campground rates for the campgrounds on the CT. I have been assuming that even Cohos thru-hikers with a small tent or backpacking hammock are still expected to pay the full fee - 23 dollars and up. Which is very high for backpacking standards.
Is there any discount or other way around these fees?

You should go to the NH State Parks website and check the rates for Coleman State Park, Lake Francis Campground, and Deer Mountain Campground.
I'm not sure about the $23 rate, but I do know the state has increased rates considerably because of the budget problems the state is having (and all other states for that matter).
That rate also now covers (as I understand it) the 9% Room and Meals Tax which was not levied on campgrounds until the legislature passed an extension to that tax just a few months ago.
But check the North Country prices. They are usually a little lower than downstate. There will certainly be NO discounts.

When I checked a couple of weeks ago, Lake Francis & Coleman were $25/night while Deer Mountain was $23. I'm pretty sure the new 9% tax is in addition to these rates, since the park fees support the parks while the tax goes to the general fund. (I would love to be wrong about this.)

Thanks for that info - I've planned to avoid the camp grounds as much as possible (i.e. unless there is no legal less exensive alternative within a quite a few miles, or I'm desperate for a shower). I forwarded the link. With luck he and I will both be south bound next week (leaving Monday and, for me, Weds).

Have a few secret free places to share with you.
One that is the perfect Cohos Trail hikers place is the Mountain Bungalow hostel on Danforth Road in Piittsburg. Showers, toilet, full kitchen, super beds for at least 6-8, including family sleeping quarters. There is even a campground in the place with lots of beautiful flowers, a wonderful garden bridge, and it is right beside the trail. Cost is a donation for a night.
I've stayed there & highly recommend it to all when you are in the area or on the trail. It also is the Northern Cohos Trail Association Headquarters, just a 1 day walk from Canada. Ideal for your food cache and you meet new friends. Yes indeed, quite Perfect!
