I'm wondering about footwear for the trail. I've used trail runners for fairly rugged trails (The Long Trail in Vermont, and the New Hampshire AT starting north of the border and north of Mahoosuc arm and notch) and been happy with them. Of course, they get soaked at times - but they also dry out fairly quickly. Boots are slower to soak (especially with Gortex), but take forever to dry (if at all) and I find my feet suffer more in wet boots than in wet trail runners.
Has anyone used trail runners on the CT? Has anyone who has been comfortable backpacking other trails with trail runners concluded that the CT is not the place for trail runners? Any contrary opinions?

I think it is a matter of what you prefer when most of your hiking is done below timberline on "soft" woods trails and, in the case of the CT, on trails that are old skidways and snowmobile trails that tend to have grass or weeds in them in mid to late summer (can be wet all the time because of moisture on plants).
Anything that sheds water well and dries out readily is a plus. I've found that heavy leather boots are best for rock, but lighter synthetics are better for the sorts of woods trails that you find over much of the CT.

I am always a boots above the ankle hiker, 'cuz I always disliked bruised ankles in case of scraping the rocks. I adore crocs around camp in the 3 seasons & hiked to West Bond w/them. In the winter cold, the North Face '700' down slippers, for me, are two thumbs up in the tent at night. YMMV.
Bottom line: Whatever makes you and da feet happy is what you should choose. Enjoy the trail my friend!

Glad you are going to hike the CT. I will gladly help with trans/caches. Please feel free to email and let me know.
It was delightful fun attending the many activities. I camped for 2 days and it only rained for 1 day! The really great news is we'll do it again next year~!!
