There are rock profiles all over the Whites, all associated with human faces or heads. But one of the very best profiles of all isn't of a two-legged creature, but a four-legged one. And the profile is virtually unknown.
On Rogers Ledge in the Kilkenny there is a very fine profile of the head of a basset hound or beagle hound. It's about six feet log and sits below the ledge. But you can see it easily if you know where to look for it.
Standing on Rogers Ledge facing the view, move to your right along the ledge until the trees stop you. Now lean forward (don't fall off) and look back to the left along the ledge. There are several blocks of granite just below the edge and one of them shows a distinct profile of a dog, complete with one ear, eye socket, long snout and bulbous nose.
You can actually see it on the Cohos Trail website. Go to the Photo Album. Click on Photo 1, and that will bring up a double string of photos. The profile is in the second row down and on the right. It is near the very center of the photo. It is slightly hidden by the rock in front in the photo, but in reality there is a bit more of it to be seen when on the ledge.
Say hello to Rogers' Dog for me when you are there.
