Here's a quick sketch about some of the advances we're making right now.
1. The view at Panorama lean-to will be restored today, as a few dozen small trees come down and the terrific view to the southwest, west and northwest opens up again.
The lean-to has also gotten two coats of stain and the grounds around the structure have been cleaned and brushed out.
2. The Deadwater Trail is now open, blazed and signed. It eliminates nearly five miles of road walking.
3. The new Camp Otter Trail should see work in the very near future and have a 500-foot puncheon bridge (bog bridge) installed in the vicinity of Coon Brook. The bridge over Coon Brook will get improvements, as well. When complete, this will open up nearly four miles of trail and reduce road walking by nearly that much.
4. Trails from Coleman State Park south to Dixville Notch wayside have been clipped and cleaned.
5. The Lake Francis Trail has been swept, as have the routes up to Young's Store at Happy Corner in Pittsburg.
6. The East Side Trail around Nash Bog has been clipped and cleaned.
7. Proposed new trails from Mountain Bungalow at Mt. Prospect in Pittsburg all the way to Second Connecticut Lake have been GPS and flagged. Hopefully, many of these will come on line before snow flies later this year.
8. By mid-August, the Canadians will open a long link trail along the border mountains down to the border customs stations, so that the Cohos Trail and the Sentiers Frontaliers system can finally be joined after a decade of residing in limbo.
Pete and Lainie Castine of Pittsburg have taken the lead on most of this and have helped us at The Cohos Trail Association make real, tangible advances.
It's getting better all the time, eh!
