I found these weather records for Pittsburg NH at weatherbase.com. I was wondering if this looks representative of all of Coos county, or how much these numbers vary depending on how far north or south you go. We're planning to do our CT thruhike in mid/late August... to avoid blackflies, take advantage of cooler weather, and still have a good amount of daylight for hiking. Has anyone else hiked the CT that time of year. Anything else we should know about the weather or otherwise? Also, if anyone has any anecdotal info or stories about the weather in the area I'd love to hear those too. That's interesting.... Seems like June is by far the wettest month but the chart doesn't show that.
Pittsburg tends to have different weather that begins at the metal bridge (town line - HA!) So when it's raining up here, the sun is out in Colebrook and below. We also have our own private snowstorms in the winter too.

In August, weather in Coos is quite similar north to south, but can differ a good deal in other seasons. In the Pittsburg area, the region is at the highest general elevation, hundreds of feet higher than, say, Whitefield.
Because Pittsburg is higher in elevation, precipitation tends to be greater as the cooler air and the elevations tend to wring more moisture out of storms.
But in August, things tend to level out. August and September are usually the drier months of the year, and the bugs are gone by the time you'll be coming through.
It is one of the best times of the year to hike the Cohos Trail. September is my favorite, with August a close second. The last week of September and the first few days of October are peak foliage season. Beautiful, but quite cool at night.
I was up on the ridge between Mt. Garfield and Mt. Lafayette two days ago and got stuck for 15 minutes in a hail storm driven by 40 mile an hour winds. That can happen anywhere in Coos in the summer.
Just be sure to have a good set of rain gear or a big rain poncho with you, and you should have a fine time on the trail in August.
