Hello from the Cohos Trail,
Below is some information you can use for 2009. If you are planning to hike the trail this year, please make a note of the items below.
1. Slide Brook Trail Closed
This trail, from Route 115 across from the Owlshead Trail trailhead is closed and will not reopen until late in 2010. It needs major puncheon bridging and an actual bridge span. Detour down Route 115 to Route 115A and head north for a quarter mile and look for an orange gate on the left 100 feet off the road. That's the old B&M railroad bed headed west toward Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. Take that route.
2. Col. Whipple Trail (Old Cherry Pond Trail)
This trail is in the best shape it has ever been in and this year there will be a parking lot on the Whipple Road so that people may park there for a day hike.
3. Kilkenny Ridge Trail
Be sure to haul plenty of water with you over the Pliny Range (Jefferson to the Mt. Cabot Cabin). There are very few places to obtain water during normal to dry summers.
4. The Sugarloaf Mountain Trail
This trail has been completely rebuilt. It is a spur trail on the CT, but it offers one of the finest views north of the Whites.
5. Dixville Peak
You may encounter work crews on the south flank and upper areas of Dixville Peak. There is likely to be a crew or two of construction workers preparing to erect 300 foot wind turbine towers on the ridgeline.
6. The Approach to Panorama Lean-to From the South
About half a mile before you reach the Panorama lean-to you will come across a new access road on the ridgeline. We use that access road for trail for a quarter mile (not listed in the guidebook). You will see a thin tower as you exit the woods onto the lane. That is a tower with ananometers attached to it. They measure wind speed.
7. Short Cut
Use the short cut on the map in the vicinity of Mud Pond and Nathan Pond in all but dry weather. The route in the lowest part of the valley is subject to very wet conditions unless it is a dry summer.
8. Ben Young Hill
There is likely to be quite a bit of trail work being done on Ben Young Hill in Clarksville this summer. Keep checking with the website during the summer months to see how things are progressing. If possible, we will have a reroute and the new Dead Water Trail established when you get into the vicinity.
9. New Trail in Pittsburg
Also keep tabs on the website for information about new trails in the Pittsburg area. We hope to be able to cut no less than 12 miles of new trail in the region, trail that will take you from Prospect Mountain through to Big Brook Bog and maybe even as far as Second Connecticut Lake dam without having to trek on Route 3 for more than a few feet.
