I'm looking to thru-hike this summer and considering having my dog join me for part or all of the trip.
What concerns and resources pertain to dogs on the Cohos? Are there areas where they are not welcome or not allowed? Are there areas that would be difficult for them, such as places with ladders or significant water crossings? Lastly, are there any places or service providers that are particularly dog friendly?

Hi Dogs for the most part are not a problem on the Cohos Trail. We know that the state campgrounds allow leashed pets but can not answer for the lodges or private campgrounds. Bear Ledge Campground will allow pets. We will try to find out about the lodges and private campgrounds for you and post it here. It is asked that dog owners on the trail keep their pets under control at all times so as not to effect someone else's hike. It has been our experience on the Cohos Trail that most pet owners are good about this. Please remember that during a moose encounter, many moose will not run and have been known to kill dogs. Enjoy the trail.

Just a note about your dog's feet.
In the Montalban and Presidential ridgelines, there is very fine granular rock debris that has been known to cause some problems with the feet of dogs. The granular material is rather rough and sharp due to tiny quarts crystals in the mix. These can abraid the pads of dogs when the animals are exposed to the material for a good length of time.
There are commercial products on the market to tough the pads of dogs and give them protection, stuff used by dogsled enthusiasts. You might look into it on the web.

I've used Musher's secret with good effect for my dog's paws. I'm not sure that its any better than some less expensive options - but it certainly helps condition the paws.
