Hi all
I plan on hiking the entire trail in 2009. Beginning the planning now and about to submit my membership. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity.
Any others planning to thru-hike in 2009?

I'm taking two weeks late this summer to hike the CT, but it won't be a thru-hike. At this point, I'm thinking of the northernmost stretch, from Rt. 26 or Coleman State Park up to the border & back. I hope TCTA will have another June gathering like last year's, so I can chat up the locals (hi, Pete & Lainie!) and see for myself what conditions are like before I commit to a solo endeavor.

I'm hoping to have time for thru-hike, if I can get enough time off. My plan is to start at Canada and head south. If I get enough time off, I might head towards Vermont when I finish.

I'm hoping to start in July, maybe the 20th or soon after.
Are you going to do an on-line journal? I'm hoping people will keep on line journal. The selfish reason is that I find them interesting and useful, but also it can help spread the word about the trail.
I've done journals at trailjournals.com for the Long Trail and Northville Placid. They also have a few for the Cohos.

Well if it happens, then I would like to.. just not sure how I would get that done. Do people have others post for them? Do they do it afterwards?
I have a trailjournals acct set up and will probably post as I prepare for the trip, whether I do it or not (I had it already set up for a 2008 thru hike that didnt happen).
I might see you on the trail if it works out the way we both plan...

You can snail mail back portions of the journa to someone who will enter itl, have someone at home post and keep them up to date by cell phone or land line when you have access, some people are using a blackberry. A lot of people end up keeping a journal on paper and then enter it when they finish.
I've done a blend. I mail back some items, ask my wife to post some up dates en route and then flesh it out when I'm done.

Gearing up and planning time..
Im trying to plan out where I will stay each night - how feasible does this seem?
1 Dry River Shelter 2 Cherry Mt Rd Campsite 3 Owlhead Area before 115 4 Applebrook B&B 4b Mt Starr King 5 Mt Cabot Lodge 6 Before Dvls Hopyard Trail 7 Percy Loop Campsite 8 Baldhead Summit Leanto 9 Dixville Notch trailside 10 Sportsman's Lodge 11 Clarksville Pond Camp 12 Lake Francis Campgrnd 13 Deer Mt Campgrnd 14 Deer Mt Campgrnd
The only one that has me worried is the 1st day stretch to the Dry River Shelter. Im in pretty reasonable shape - and the AMC trail guide has a book time around 7 hr 45 min to Isolation Trail - and I tend to be 10-20% below booktime - any comments?

Paull,
I see from your proposed schedule you have no rest days figured in with exception of Deer Mtn Campsite at the end). I would strongly suggest you incorporate some zero days if at all possible. If you end up with a rainy day, are you still going to be able to maintain you pace?
I am also planning to do the trail this July but do plan a couple of rest days. Logistically, it would be easiest for me if I start end of June since I am planning to go to the celebration at Sportsmens. I live way down south in Concord.
apart from my above suggestion, your schedule sounds quite reasonable to me. Applebrook is so well located, it is nearly impossible to avoid staying there. Might even be a welcome respite.

OVERNIGHTS ON THE COHOS TRAIL
You may overnight at Dry River Campground. Don't forget that there is the Mt. Resolution Shelter north of Mt. Crawford, about three miles from Route 302. It is a small lean-to.
People often camp near Dry River, off of the summits in the protected valley, then run over Mt. Eisenhower and down to Bretton Woods. You may stay at the Mt. Deception campground just off the start of the Old Cherry Mt. Road.
You could camp on the downslope of Owls Head in Jefferson. You may not camp in the Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge. If you stay on Owls Head you will reach the Applebrook B&B easily by day's end. Remember, the Slide Brook Trail is closed, so you have to take Route 115 east a mile, then Route 115A north a quarter mile to reach the old railbed west into Pondicherry Wildlife Refuge.
Camp atop Starr King, yes. But I'd push on to the summit of Mt. Weeks and camp there, provided you've got a supply of water with you. That makes for a long day from Applebrook to Mt. Weeks summit, but it makes for a much better run the next day, down from Weeks, over Terrace and up Mt. Cabot to the old firetower cabin. Stay at the cabin, by all means.
Next night, you could stay at the campsite under Rogers Ledge or just off the ledge itself. Then spend a long but not to arduous day to reach Percy Loop Camp (unless you decide to stay at the Stark Village Inn or the Montgomery Camp).
Eventually reach Percy Loop Camp. The next day, you can reach the Baldhead Lean-to about eleven miles away. Again, this is not to difficult a push, but you do go over Sugarloaf Arm, Gadwah Notch and up Baldhead (none steep).
From Baldhead lean-to, Panorama lean-to is 13 miles away with a lot of vertical between the two. I've done it several times, but it takes all day. To break it up, camp above the notch or somewhere in the valley away from the falls and picnic area.
From Panorama lean-to, you can reach Coleman State Park and Sportsmans in three or four hours.
Go the from Coleman area to to Rudy's Cabins and Campground rather easily during the next day. It is a pleasant ramble on old farm roads much of the way. From Rudy's you can reach Lake Francis Campground or Bear Ledge Campground/Mountain Bungalow easily in a day, even if you take your time. Or you could push on to Ramblewood Cabins and Campground, if you like.
Then it's on to Deer Mountain Campground the next day, about 12 miles away.
We will be opening new trails soon in the Clarksville and PIttsburg area, so keep in touch. Ben Young Hill will be taken out of the equation, but a new route into Dead Water and Lake Francis will open up. Check the website often.

I'm planning to thruhike the cohos trail in mid august w/ my girlfriend and my dog. We're starting our planning now. I'm sure we'll have questions, but for now I just wanted to pop on this board and say HI! - Adam (My trail name on the AT was Doctor Space Monkey 5000, but I'm not sure if I'm gonna use that for the Cohos trail...) Hi all I plan on hiking the entire trail in 2009. Beginning the planning now and about to submit my membership. Thanks for this wonderful opportunity. Any others planning to thru-hike in 2009?

would hiking from Deception campground to Apple brook in onedaday be a bit too much? I would hope to get to Applebrook by 4pm ish. Percy Peaks suggested in a previous post staying somewhere on the slopes of Owls head. Of course from there it is down hill or flat so it should be easy.
The pilot range is a bit of concern to me. AppleBrook B and B Mt Cabot shelter I guess would be a long arduous day. Staying atop Mt Weeks as Percy Peaks suggested, being a mountain top would there be descent level place to pitch tent? where are the water sources between Star King and Mt Cabot? I think this could be a difficult stretch water wise. I would rather not dry camp twice in a row. What do you think?

would hiking from Deception campground to Apple brook in onedaday be a bit too much? I would hope to get to Applebrook by 4pm ish. (Caution: This is not from personal experience but eyeballed figures from maps, databook and the rough overlays I did on Google Earth, they might be off, and so I might be very wrong). It looks to be approximately 20 miles from Deception Camp to Applebrook with approx 1500 ft gain in elevation up Owlshead. Sunrise seems to be around 5 am which would mean a 2mi/per hour average (including all breaks) for the day in order to arrive at the B&B by 4pm. Depending on how fit you are, it seems doable. However, Id also imagine that it depends on your haul before then. If you are moving from the southern terminus to Mt Deception campground in 2 days - the 20 mile day 3 might be asking a lot. Applebrook to Mt Cabot shelter is approx 15 miles and there seems to be some decent elevation changes along the way- but again, seems doable theoretically. But again, it would depend on your fitness and how much you pushed it the days prior. I probably couldn't do it if it was day 4 with the previous 20 mi day 3. The maps and guidebook do single out Kilkenny as a possible dry stretch. But the maps (and databook) show a few water areas- From the databook: - (Mile 44.4) Mt Starr King Trail (trailhead) - Water - (Mile 46.3) Water- spring on left The databook then doesnt have any mention of water until Mt Cabot Lodge. Maps: There seems to be a few potential water sources between The summit of Starr King and Mt Cabot. - water source between Middle Weeks and Mt Weeks - water source in Willard Notch - off the CT junction with York Pond Trail - water source in Bunnell Notch- off the CT- junction with Bunnell Notch Trail Hope this helps- but others with real experience might be able to provide more trustworthy information:) I'm revising my itinerary- will probably bypass the Presidentials and begin instead at 302/ Cherry Mt Road then take those 2 days saved and use them as rest days along the way.

OVERNIGHTS ON THE COHOS TRAIL Percy Peaks Thank you for all this. Between yours and David's comments I have revised my planned sites. Given time restrictions and other reasons- I've shorted my trip- picking up the CT outside of the Presidentials - 1 Owlhead Area before 115 2 Applebrook B&B 3 Mt Weeks 4 Mt Cabot Lodge 5 Rest Day (or taken somewhere between Applebrook and Sportsman's Lodge) 6 Rodgers Ledge 7 Percy Loop Campsite 8 Baldhead Summit Leanto 9 Panorama Leanto 10 Sportsman's Lodge 11 Rudy's Campground 12 Lake Francis Campgrnd 13 Deer Mt Campgrnd 14 Deer Mt Campgrnd
